Simple Vegan Tofu Sausage Crumble Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu around 400 grams
  • 1 tbsp light soy sauce or tamari for gluten-free substitute
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 tbsp breadcrumbs optional
  • 2-3 drops liquid smoke optional

Method

  1. Drain and pat dry the block of tofu, then crumble it with your hands over a bowl until it resembles sausage crumbles.*
  2. Add the soy sauce, smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper (and breadcrumbs and liquid smoke if using). Stir the crumbed tofu with a spoon until everything is evenly distributed.
  3. OVEN METHOD:
Preheat the oven to 200 C. Spread the crumbled tofu onto a parchment-lined baking sheet in a single, even layer.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring halfway through, until golden-brown and crisped to your liking.
  4. AIR FRYER METHOD:
Spread the crumbled tofu onto the lined air fryer basket in a single, even layer. Don't overcrowd the basket (cook in batches if necessary).
Air fry for 10 to 15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until golden-brown and crisped to your liking.

Notes

*For a chewier texture, leave the crumbles fairly large. For a crispier texture, crumble the tofu into smaller pieces.
